Honolulu dispatch reports two storm related deaths as 40 to 50 foot waves battered Oahus north shore. Officials said dozens of homes were destroyed or damaged and hundreds homeless as 20 to 30 foot swells forecast. Coast guard warned residents to evacuate if needed. Robert Groves a Pearl Harbor seaman was swept from a beach and died. a second man died of a heart attack after rescue efforts.
Police seek 38 confirmed dead or missing after a fire at an 80 year old three story home for the aged in LAC Quebec. Rescue teams search rubble while officials say 67 were inside at start and 28 survived or were injured. Fire swept through timber structure as residents screamed for help.
A former Mrs. J Paul Getty seeks court protection to stop her son Jean Ronald Getty from ejecting her from the home she has occupied for 36 years. She alleges harassment and says the property was bought for her lifetime use though title rests in their son.
In Washington a Catholic priest, Father Joseph Lucey of Hartsville South Carolina, warned delegates against pushing too far on a guaranteed annual income for the poor. He urged caution about a $5,400 plan endorsed by many delegates, while Nixon proposed a lower figure and pledged to fight hunger. The conference with over 4,000 participants faced a vote on the higher proposal after a show of hands by more than 200 supporters.
Judge Rupert Dean found Mr and Mrs Raymond Koenig guilty of assault and battery after the couple testified they grabbed their 23 year old son by his six inch beard and dragged him across the street to urge him to leave a girlfriend and return to his wife and child. The judge fined court costs but remitted them and said he would likely have done the same.
