El Paso plans huge Navajo coal strip mine project
El Paso Natural Gas proposes a 40 000 acre coal strip mine on Navajo land in San Juan County New Mexico to feed a Burnham coal gasification complex producing about 256 million cubic feet daily of synthetic pipeline gas. The plan includes a minor pipeline to connect to existing lines and draws up to 10 000 acre feet of water annually from the Navajo and Wavajo reservoirs amid expected regional natural gas shortages and air pollution concerns in California.
