Demo Party Chief Faces Vote Fight After Election Loss
An aide says Democratic National Committee members have enough votes to back Jean Westwood for chairmanship if she resists the challenge. The 303-member body currently has 209 votes, with a majority of 165 needed, though 118 could be required after the remaining member selections. The Strauss camp claims near 100 votes, while opponents spark a potential middle-ground compromise led by O'Brien or other names such as Mitchell, Manait, Shriver, and Crangle.

Kneip won't oppose McGovern in South Dakota race
An aide to Gov. Richard Kneip said Kneip has ruled out a 1974 Democratic senatorial challenge to Sen. George McGovern. Executive assistant Ted Mucasler said Kneip will likely return to private life rather than seek McGovern's reelection to a third six-year term. Kneip, 52, won a second term by a large margin last month while McGovern carried little beyond South Dakota amid Nixon defeats.
