Speck trial moved from Chicago amid publicity
In Chicago a Criminal Court judge granted a defense request to move the Richard Speck murder trial citing sensational news coverage affecting a fair trial. The judge said the news coverage was excellent and acknowledged the people's right to know and the defendant's right to a fair trial. No location was announced, only that it would be in Illinois. Prosecutors said the state would not object to the move, aiming to avoid a conviction being overturned on appeal. Speck, 24, a drifter and seaman from Dallas, was found mentally competent to stand trial. The jury reportedly deliberated briefly before reaching a verdict on competence.
