Gallagher Pledges College Autonomy
Dr Buell G Gallagher chancellor of California state colleges pledged full autonomy to presidents and faculties. He told the Orange County Press Club in Santa Ana that he would not dictate campus policy on inviting speakers and that students should decide controversial issues on their merits. He noted CCNY was a Communist target and urged selective faculty control and safeguarded inquiry while opposing universal military training.

Soldiers Complain on Callup in Polk La Report
About 100 soldiers of the 19th Armored Division signed a letter seeking release from active duty and criticizing the callup. Maj. James E. Vance said he had seen a copy, noting complaints arise when many are posted at one post. The letter questions the emergency, cites prior service, and mentions married soldiers able to avoid service. Vance described the post as generally adequate and the main demand as to be released from duty. The 49th Division was activated in October and sent to Fort Polk, where facilities are dilapidated.
