Reds cashing in on Atlantic cruises in Montreal
Montreal reports on Bulgarian and Soviet ships operating Atlantic cruises under time charter to March Shipping. Varna and two Soviet ships, Alexandr Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, run 22 Montreal trips yearly, seven trans Atlantic. Salaries are low, tips popular, and crews adapt menus and service to attract Western tourists. Captain Dimitar Pascalev leads Varna with a multilingual background as passengers enjoy weeklong trips from Montreal to St Pierre Miquelon, Gaspe, and back.
