Destroyer and Nuclear Ship Nearly Collide in Narrow Channel
In Norfolk two ships nearly collided in a confined waterway near the Savannah bound for Chesapeake Bay. The radar destroyer Stick reportedly missed a close approach with the Savannah carrying 24 passengers and a token cargo. A Navy spokesman said the near miss occurred as both vessels entered the channel to pass each other. The Savannah’s master Commodore Gaston R. De Gropie reported the close call and the Navy said it is reviewing the incident.
