Market gains halt after week of advance in New York
The stock market paused after a five day rise as the Dow Jones average ended in the red at 482.63, off 0.90, with gains broadening into a consolidation phase. Analysts cited uneven confidence, rising interest rates, and positive indicators as factors behind the temporary pullback. Big Board volume at 2 p.m. showed Philip Morris down 2 and American Can rising.
