Deserters Rise in South Vietnamese Army in 1966
In South Vietnam the armed forces total about 705000, with desertions rising in early 1966. In six months 67,000 soldiers deserted across regular, regional, and popular forces, threatening a higher year end total unless deterrents curb the exodus. New decree Law 15 imposes hard labor, up to life or death in enemy desertion cases, aiming to cut desertions by November.
