Alioto pushes anti strike law for police and firemen
San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto urged California to pass a state law banning strikes by uniformed services. After meeting with New York Mayor Abraham Beame he defended using emergency powers to end a police and fire strike and said the city could have been paralyzed otherwise. He claimed new contracts involved a compromise and cited a 13 percent police raise, overruling supervisors.
