Interpreters in My Lai trial spurs bid for witnesses

In the My Lai court martial of Capt. Ernest Medina, defense lawyer F Lee Bailey pressed to compel the government to produce two South Vietnamese interpreters Nguyen Dinh Phu and Duong Minh, arguing they should testify under oath. Bailey accused officials of withholding the witnesses and noted depositions had been used without their appearance. The session was shortened to review the depositions as potential contempt charges loomed over a reluctant witness. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Richard Decker, 60, manager of the Children's Zoo, and a woman identified only as Donna, 35, were found dead in an on site apartment, with investigators noting a hose from a car exhaust leading into the room.

Reston notes China aims to refashion its people

James Reston of the New York Times arrived in Hong Kong after a seven week mainland tour. He described an evangelical atmosphere in China and compared it to Scotch Calvinism, saying Beijing seems intent on changing the character of a quarter of humanity. Reston cited his interview with Premier Zhou Enlai and doubted Nixon's Peking visit would alter Chinese policies.
