In Oakland the First and Last dance Saloon, run by George Heinhold’s family since 1880, preserves a storied past with photos and relics as local lore teller Paul Croy’s poem recounts London’s youth and era. Bartender George Heneger keeps the legend alive amid tourists, regulars, and aging timbers.

Re raise drinking age urged at WCTU convention
Edith Stanley, president of the national Woman's Christian Temperance Union, urged states to raise the drinking age to 21 citing teen drunk driving deaths. She noted 8,000 youths are annually involved in such crashes and said lawmakers have moved slowly. The WCTU, founded in 1874, has about 250,000 members and aims to revive prohibition while also pursuing local option laws, liquor industry restrictions, and drug education.
