Man pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter in bar shooting

Long Beach man Richard Douglas Blessing pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Francis Miller outside the Cardinal Club bar after a pool hall fight. He admitted a firearm enhancement that could add years to his sentence and awaits sentencing in Sept. 22.

Betty Ford under pressure from First Lady remarks

In Lubbo, Mrs. Lyndon Johnson said Betty Ford spoke hastily on sex under First Lady pressures. Johnson defended Ford saying the public would understand the stress and remain close despite disagreements. Johnson emphasized her private life and duties, including handling mail and speaking engagements. A separate San Pasqual brush fire near the San Diego Wild Animal Park burned 300 acres but was contained without endangering the park.
