Ray Hendricks and his 19-year-old son completed a 15 000 mile voyage from Oxnard to Yokohama in a 40 foot sailboat with their dog Bodie. They endured storms in Japan and a monsoon near New Guinea while relying on sails and limited engine use. The trip lasted about a year with two months in Guam and ports of call including Yokohama. Hendricks plans to sell the boat and live briefly with his sister in Ventura as he reorients life after his wife’s death.

Shipyard Taps Kaune as New Commander in Ceremony
Capt James J Kaune will assume command of Long Beach Naval Shipyard and new Service Group Building on Aug 30. Ground-breaking for the 19400 square foot two story Pier E facility occurred Feb 25 1974 attended by approx 200 workers with 290 more daily to use the complex. The building consolidates service group functions and includes administrative offices shop management wood working painting rigging and temporary service shops plus a 812 million computerized Material Control Center for long range inventory planning. Kaune previously served as Philadelphia Naval Shipyard production officer and has a career including service on USS Floyd B Parks and USS Tarawa and time with NAVSEC Philadelphia Division.

Paramount school trustees target realistic goals for year

Property tax kept at 55 cent rate in Hawaiian Gardens
For the third year Hawaiian Gardens keeps the property tax rate at 5.5 dollars per thousand. The City Council approved the current year budget raising about 73 thousand dollars for the city general fund. The redevelopment district diverts additional taxes to upgrades and special projects. Tor rance airport plan shelved for reevaluation
The Tor rance City Council postponed a $4.6 million airport master plan to September 30 to resolve conflicts between land leasing for commercial development and building T hangars. The plan, prepared years ago, now shows costs rising from about 2.63 million to 4.59 million, with 2.52 million recommended for short range capital.
