Boeing to build a junior jumbo jet to beat 747
Boeing said it would produce the 747SP, a 47 foot shorter wide-body jet carrying 288 to 360 passengers. It would fly farther and cleaner, burning about 20 percent less fuel and cruising higher to overfly congestion on busy routes. The plane aims for net nonstop links such as New York to Tokyo and Amsterdam, with a near 6990 mile range. Boeing planned early talks with Pan Am and Japan Airlines as it weighed orders.
