Soviet Navy buildup linked to Middle East crisis
Washington said Moscow used the Middle East crisis to expand its naval presence in the Mediterranean. Ambassador Harland Cleveland cited U.S. Navy estimates showing 48 Soviet ships operating in the area last month, with many modern ships and submarines. He noted naval days in the Med rose dramatically in 1987 compared with 1963, and submarine activity climbed nearly 2000 percent since 1963.
