Navy plans large cuts to crew and ships in funding push
The Navy seeks 2.6 billion to start building new ships and reduce total force to about 700,000 by July. About 52 ships are over 25 years old, with manpower cuts achieved by lowering recruit inflow and more liberal early retirements. Some installations may close, and there will be no major cuts in fleet operations in Vietnam or the Mediterranean. A separate defense savings effort could require about 10,000 more personnel reductions across services.
