Prisoner media access upheld by panel in California case
A three judge federal panel ruled California prison rules blocking interviews with inmates unconstitutional while rejecting a blanket right for newsmen to interview specific prisoners. The decision requires the corrections department to revise the rule and allow interviews at the earliest practical time under supervised conditions. It cites prior rulings that the press has no absolute right to access sources beyond the general public.

California cremation ash disposal bills sent to governor
In Sacramento the Assembly unanimously approved two measures by Sen Anthony Beilenson to expand ash disposal rules. One bill lifts the ban on ash disposal at sea from planes beyond three miles offshore and allows ash litter to be dropped from shore or anywhere in the ocean. The other bill permits cremated remains burial in both incorporated and unincorporated areas. Both measures passed 720 votes.
