Love calls for balance amid backlash against ecologists
White House energy czar John Love warned the environmentalist movement could lose public support if energy shortages bite and restrictions on energy use persist. He urged a practical balance between resource development and environmental protection to avoid a backlash from those affected by energy shortages. He noted heating oil stocks are higher now than last year but warned shortages could deepen if demand rises, and rationing plans are being updated though no immediate rollout is expected.

Drillers shift to gas as prices rise pressure
United Press International reports a shift by major and independent drillers from oil to gas driven by higher wellhead prices after FPC policy changes. Interstate gas prices near 60 cents per thousand cubic feet and new contracts revived drilling in the Rocky Mountains, midcontinent, Texas Permian Basin and Appalachian Basin. In 1973 half-year gas well completions reached 2,725, up 29.3 percent from 1972, while overall drilling slowed. Gas wells now make up about 22.3 percent of U.S. drilling, roughly double their usual share.
