Brookhaven scientists claim breakthrough in plant genetics
Brookhaven National Laboratory researchers report a successful parasexual hybridization creating a fertile tobacco plant from two different species. They say this may yield crops with new traits such as edible parts both above and below ground, risking a shift in global food production. The work, in Japan and England, is seen as a major but early step toward revolutionary agriculture.
