Oil firm's exec denies price fixing amid industry critique
Phillips Petroleum chairman We W. Kevler said Thursday he was unaware of any policy among major oil companies to curb price competition. Federal Trade Commission official Lawrence G. Meyer asserted oil industry competition was virtually nonexistent due to concentration in a few firms. Kevler criticized Meyer's claim as unfounded while noting earnings of most major companies were down. Meyer addressed the National Congress of Petroleum Retailers in Las Vegas, citing that 20 corporations controlled more than 80 percent of petroleum shipments and market strength.
