Massive Power Failure Strikes West Coast in 1965 Event
An extensive power outage hit California and nearby states in November 1965, cutting 72 kilowatts at the Moorepark substation and leaving 32,000 Ventura County residents without power briefly. The blackout extended to Denver and across western systems, then rapidly recovered due to reserve power and automatic switching. The incident stemmed from an experimental operation at the Sylmar terminal linking California with British Columbia, triggering surges and a temporary separation of Arizona, Colorado, and other grids.
