Yarn shop confidences and crafty trends in Long Beach
Barbara Clarke, a Britisher who runs Yarn Mart, describes how knitters and needleworkers share confidences in the shop. She notes retirees from the Midwest and vacationers flock for slippers and afghans while many men knit sweaters as a form of therapy. Young marrieds learn to knit for baby clothes and fashion, with color trends like psychedelic and Mexican tones driving designs. An Irish tradition of trademark patterns appears in sweaters, and knitting is seen as a communal, therapeutic craft in this intimate Long Beach scene.
