Nixon tax saga ends with back tax bill and audit
In the White House era Richard Nixon saw his net worth rise from about 200000 to just under a million amid land deals with wealthy friends and favorable tax actions. Facing a furor he publicized tax returns for 1969 to 1973 and sought a congressional ruling. On April 3 1974 the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation announced back taxes of 444022 dollars plus interest. The White House also said IRS findings showed 432787 dollars plus interest with a negligence penalty. Nixon agreed to pay the IRS amount. He had not filed state returns claiming San Clemente as his home. The controversy centered on large deductions for prepresidential papers and other expenses challenged by authorities.
