Ex FBI chief warned Nixon of improper staff actions

Former FBI director Patrick Gray testified that he warned President Nixon on July 6 that White House staffers were trying to confuse the Watergate investigation and that FBI reports were being relayed to Nixon. He recounted Nixon’s reply to continue the probe and said there would always be a place for him in the administration. Gray described tension over orders to destroy White House papers and rejected that the warning implicated obstruction of justice. He recalled debates over whether the CIA and FBI staff were undermining the inquiry and noted he began supplying FBI information to Dean months after the break in.
