FHA Hike Triggers Political Fire Over Mortgage Rates
The FHA raised the maximum mortgage interest rate from 5 to 14 percent and cut down payments on government backed loans, sparking Democratic charges of favored banking interests and a push to rein in FHA policy. Republicans backed the move as necessary in tight money conditions while housing groups hailed easier access to homes.

Firefighters fight brush blaze as winds hinder bombing run
GORMAN Fire fighters hoped wind conditions would permit resumption of aerial water bombing today on a 500 acre brush and timber blaze in the Los Padres National Forest. Turbulent winds caused abandonment of the operation Monday as the rotor wash struggled to reach the target area. Nolder said more than 100 men worked on the fire lines including Kern County prisoners. The fire began Sunday about 112 miles southwest of Ventura in Ventura County, 40 miles north of Bakersfield and west of US Highway 99. No structures were threatened.
