Torrential rains lash Northeast causing drownings and evacuations
Two drownings in North Plainfield New Jersey occurred as floodwaters rose up to ten feet forcing hundreds from their homes. A 15 year old, Stephen Langhorne, drowned after he fell from a canoe and was trapped beneath an abandoned car. A second drowning followed when a car was swept onto another in flood waters. Additional fatalities included two heart attack deaths on Somerset Street. Across the region, major arteries faced heavy traffic and widespread power outages amid flash flood warnings in western Connecticut western Massachusetts and southwestern Vermont. In New York City rainfall knocked out thousands of telephone lines snarled subways and delayed trains. Norristown Pennsylvania endured severe flooding with evacuations and a Red Cross shelter housing fifty two families. An unidentified man died in a crash and fire near the Valley Forge exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Calif senators back Sneed for appeals court
