Major quakes linked to seven year earth wobble
Washington scientists say a seven year wobble in the earth's axis correlates with major earthquakes. They note three magnitude 8.1 quakes this year and a 7.9 quake in Chile, with data suggesting a pattern over 70 years though not claiming the wobble alone causes quakes.

US faces looming shortage of raw minerals for decades
Hollis M. Dole of the Interior Department told a Senate Defense Production panel that the United States, the world’s largest consumer, will confront an acute mineral shortage as nationalization abroad, higher environmental costs, and lagging tech hinder extraction of low grade ores. He noted U.S. mineral consumption since 1940 exceeds past world production and warned of rising foreign dependence. He warned that easily accessible high grade ore is exhausted, expensive capital, up to 50 billion dollars over five years, and stricter pollution rules threaten mining operations. He cited minerals valued at 260 billion dollars since 1940, compared with 250 billion worldwide before 1940.
