Underground Bay Crossing: San Francisco Tube for 0-Mile Trains
The old Oakland ferry route will be revived as an underwater rail tube beneath San Francisco Bay. Built by the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, the $89 million project aims to span 3.6 miles between the old ferry terminal and the San Francisco Ferry Building with prefabricated sections lowered into the trench. Sections 24 by 47 feet are joined underwater, lined with concrete, and sealed to withstand earthquakes between the San Andreas and Hayward faults. The system uses dredges, barges, cranes, and a 50‑ton hydraulic jack to snug sections, then rails are laid on a concrete bed without ties.
