Reds Seek Arms Unit Boycott at UN Disarmament Meeting
The Soviet bloc urged a general boycott of the August 15 United Nations Disarmament Commission meeting, while pushing a rival summit proposal for all 82 U.N. members. Communist delegations visited missions to sway participation, claiming the Commission lacks authority beyond delaying tactics. The State Department stressed the U.N. meeting would proceed, noting Khrushchev could attend if desired. In Alabama, Emmett Leverette, 42, was jailed on kidnapping charges after a group abducted two Black men from Harpersville, flogging one.
