Hearing-ear dogs aid deaf households in Boston suburb
In Arlington a deaf couple received Penny the mixed breed as one of the first three hearing-ear dogs trained by the Barnes program. The dogs learn to alert for a ringing phone, doorbell and fire alarm and can perform tasks like picking up dropped objects. Each dog undergoes a three month, $1500 training to respond to three sounds.
