Crash blocks Seaway with 8000-ton ship Prescott

In rain, the 8000-ton lake ship Prescott struck a bridge lift span on the St. Lawrence Seaway and wedged across the channel near Beauharnois, blocking the new waterway. Two ships were delayed and more were expected to back up as crews worked to free the vessel after a fuse in the lift mechanism failed. The pilot dropped anchor but the ship swung across the channel.
