Transit reform bid fails in committee
Sacramento notes the Senate Public Utilities and Corporations Committee unanimously rejected a bill by State Senator James Q. Wedworth to abolish the SCRTD board and place rapid transit control in the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Committee chair Alfred Alquist cited monumental transit problems needing a dedicated agency, while opponents argued funds and focus lie with the SCRTD and current governance. Wedworth plans further efforts this year to reorganize the district, insisting the SCRTD aims only to run buses, not develop rapid transit.
