Chou En-lai seen as obstacle to China U S accord by visitors
Uldis Kruse and 14 scholars from the Ribe Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars met Chinese Premier Chou En-lai for four hours on July 19 and reported his view that Indochina war, Taiwan, Korea, and a revival of Japanese militarism block better China U.S. relations. He urged peace talks, opposed force to reunify Taiwan, and described Taiwan autonomy plans. Kruse cited shifts in U.S. Taiwan policy after Nixon's China visit and warned of continued Korean war hostilities and expanding U.S. strategy in Asia.
