Black aides challenge Nixon on school busing policy
Washington UPI reports that the Council of Black Appointees urged changes to Nixon administration plans and warned that further court interventions in Denver Detroit Richmond and Nashville could widen racial divisions. Samuel Jackson criticized Justice Department involvement as chilling black support for minority rights. The group questioned the constitutional basis of a moratorium on new court ordered busing and suggested it might ease anti-busing sentiment though stopping short of opposing the proposal. Civil rights lawyers within the Justice Department criticized the busing proposals as well.
