Legislative Roundup Demands Tight Budget Ties Knight Plan
In Sacramento a Democratic legislator pushes a tighter two billion dollar state budget to curb new taxes. The Ways and Means Committee approves 1957-58 spending of 1.915 billion for state operations, restoring school aid with revenue, funding mental health and medical care, and shifting funds for Feather River. Rees seeks bipartisan support to trim nonessential outlays while noting subsidies for fairs, audits, and expanded mental hygiene.

California Assembly feet two minimum wage bills in play
In Sacramento the Assembly Industrial Relations Committee advanced two bills to set a wage floor for up to 300000 California workers. One bill proposes $1 per hour excluding agriculture and other groups while a companion $1.10 plan would also carve out certain roles. Both measures face opposition from employers figures and were trimmed after a subcommittee study to exclude more workers. Gilbert Rowland opposed the plan on behalf of San Francisco employers. The debate notes a 42 to 38 party split on budget passage and signals a couple weeks before a Senate review.
