Portugal rebels seize Lisbon as military junta proclaims new order
Dispatches from Madrid report a National Junta of Salvation has taken control in Portugal with a plan to restore civil liberties and arrange transitional elections for a new constitutional assembly. Rebels, led by young officers, claimed 29 regiments back their coup as tanks surrounded the army ministry and studios of national radio. Traffic remained largely normal while banks closed and Lisbon airport shut amid the takeover.
