Marines Die In Santa Ana Crash Injuries Reported
A crash in Santa Ana at First Street and Grand Avenue killed Cpl Fred Alan Thompson, 22, of MCAS El Toro. Sgt Johnny Bishop Nelson, 27, driver of the car, was injured and held on manslaughter charges. Sgt Michael P. Dickney, in the pickup, was in critical condition. passenger Chris Reed, 35, was uninjured. Officer Lt Thayer provided details.

Man slain in yard during dispute at home
Leland Matuive Sears died after being shot three times in the head with a .22 pistol four hours after a Thursday argument in his yard. Lt. Charles Thayer said an all-points bulletin sought Anthony Nathaniel Cale Jr. of 2230 W Cubbon St for the murder. Witnesses said Cale pushed Sears and then shot him. no motive given.

A early morning blaze of undetermined origin gutted the Orange County Democratic Central Committee offices at 844 N. Birch St Santa Ana. Reported at 4:33 a.m. by a patrol car fire units battled the one story wooden building, with damage estimated at 12 000 to the structure and 3 000 to contents. No occupants were present. Battalion Chief John Mahany led five Santa Ana Fire Department units.

Washington (UPI) Labor Secretary James D Hodgson faced a bid to end a 23 million dollar federal subsidy to the Farm Labor Service amid accusations of exploiting migrant workers. A petition by migrant advocates urged replacing the agency with a program run by the workers themselves at an estimated 16 million to 7 million less than the current cost. The filing, led by Robert Gnaizda and 17 lawyers, accuses the service and growers of cruder practices and civil rights violations including boarding workers in condemned chicken coops and forcing labor for meager wages, 1000 miles from home, with their children present.
