Pentagon to Close Three California Military Facilities
The Defense Department plans to close three California sites affecting nearly 3,000 personnel. The Naval Weapons Center at Corona, the Navy Radiological Defense Laboratory in San Francisco, and an aircraft warning land control squadron at Hamilton AFB will be reorganized. About 180 Corona workers will move to China Lake by closure, 507 San Francisco lab civilians get new posts, with many reassigned to Maryland or Virginia. Air Force personnel totaling 637 will be reassigned and 204 civilians seek reemployment. The closures, described as Navy and Air Force consolidations driven by advances in swatting and control tech, will occur over about two years.
