Phone Union Seeks End to Injunction in Strike
Washington (UPI) negotiations to end a five day national telephone strike stall as union leaders seek federal court nullification of an Alabama injunction against picketing. A CWA spokesman said progress hinges on the federal court in Mobile. The injunction, issued Friday by Circuit Judge James A Hare, bars picketing at Southern Bell installations. About 200000 CWA members in 42 states walked out last Thursday over higher wages. The wage reopener clause in the CWA contract with Southern Bell remains, but Western Electric employees had been picketing and Southern Bell workers refused to cross the line. With no strike clause removal, offenders face return to work.
