Admiral rebuttal witness questions Vietnam war plans in Pentagon Papers case
The first government rebuttal witness in the Pentagon Papers trial testified he could not recall 1969 U S operations in Vietnam. Retired Rear Admiral Lloyd Vasey defended a volume on Marine landings at Da Nang as containing very important information, while opposing counsel pressed for his memory gaps. Ellsberg and Russo, charged with espionage and theft for copying the papers, argue the information was stale by 1960. Vasey had earlier rebutted a defense witness who said the plans were useless to enemies by 1969.

Open brig order postponed by U S Navy stay
In San Francisco the Navy and Marine Corps won a two week stay from a circuit court order to free 1500 to 2000 servicemen held in brigs worldwide. The stay follows government arguments that freeing them would harm naval discipline and an earlier judge ruled their right to counsel was violated at summary courts martial.
