Knew Hedy Lamarr Charged With Theft Trial Opens

Los Angeles court hears Hedy Lamarr nicknamed the shoplifter before arrest on January 27 for stealing $86 worth of merchandise from The May Co. witness Nedra Thomas, manager of the handbag department, testifies Lamarr was seen taking a sweater and placing it in a shopping bag. The actor denies wrongdoing calling it a misunderstanding as jurors are questioned about familiarity with her films and personal life.

U S Pacifist Unit Target of Viet Eggs

A U S pacifist group led by Rev A J Muste faced hostility in Vietnam protests. Eggs were thrown while the six pacifists spoke at a news conference. Bradford Lyttle of the Non-Violent Action committee claimed government provocation and guarded access to bases and post exchanges. Vietnamese police watched calmly as protesters clashed with demonstrators.

McNamara predicts more Viet unrest in Asia

Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara told the Foreign Relations Committee that political instability is likely in underdeveloped nations and warned that the Vietnam war could see further unrest. He disputed the notion that the Vietnam conflict is a civil war, called it outside intervention, and defended U.S. restraint while citing large bomb inventories and a robust military posture. He also rejected claims of bomb shortages and argued the defense program is nonbinding on treaty commitments, stressing support programs rather than direct defense guarantees.

Midwest tornadoes leave widespread damage and injuries

Ships Collide Off Pacific Tow Line Snaps

Two Chinese Nationalist ships collided about 100 miles west of Paint Sur in the Pacific. Both vessels were former U.S. Navy transports turned over to China on March 15 at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.
