Gay couple files jointly await federal tax reply
Jack Baker and J Michael McConnell, a gay married couple from St Paul, filed a joint 1973 federal income tax return and await IRS action. An IRS official said returns are received but whether accepted is confidential. Baker and McConnell claim they saved 360 dollars and seek a legal redefinition of marital status. Minnesota State Tax Director Clarence Anderson says state law allows only husband and wife to file jointly, though he notes ambiguity in the term spouse.
