California pollution rules face $500 million price tag
Sacramento AP report says refiners would need about $800 million over nine years to meet a proposed California air pollution standard. Staff estimate cleaning sulfur from unleaded gasoline would raise consumer prices one to three cents a gallon, up to $150 over a new car’s life. The ARB proposals target sulfuric acid exhaust from catalytic converters in 1975 and newer cars. The board also tightened a 1977 gasoline vapor leakage standard from carburetors and tanks.
