Fires Fatal to 11,300 in U S in 1957
Boston reports the National Fire Protection Association notes about 11,300 Americans died in fires in 1957 and 6,400 of those deaths occurred in homes. The NFPA warns that despite safety campaigns, progress is slow and 1958 shows no clear improvement. Children under 10 accounted for 26 percent of deaths, and those over 70 for 20 percent, with home fire deaths heavily tied to defective and overheated equipment and cooking errors.
