Admiral Jackson recalls Trenton heroism at San Diego visit
Retired Admiral Richard H. Jackson visited the amphibious transport Trenton in San Diego. He recalled saving the earlier square-rigged sloop Trenton from rocks during a typhoon in 1889, a moment that helped preserve his naval career. The 16,300-ton ship, built in Seattle, was en route to Norfolk after a rain-soaked welcome by 200 of its 1,400 crew. Jackson praised sailors and noted a Congress-backed push kept him in the Navy after a career spanning 55 years before retiring as a full admiral.
