Soviet trawler master faces fines over illegal hake catch

A Soviet cargo ship escorted into Boston harbor on a second day of tightened enforcement of the 200 mile US fishing limit. The Shevchenko, a 273 foot trawler, had hake fishing permit but carried an illegally large catch of river herring. If criminal charges are filed against the master, he could face a 50000 dollar fine and six months in jail. Civil action could seize ship and cargo. Washington officials said Carter would meet Soviet diplomats to discuss relations, with fishing violations possible but not guaranteed. A separate Lerwick court fined a Soviet captain 17000 pounds for fishing without a license inside Britain’s 600 mile limit, and seized gear and catch.
