Dutchman Willy de Roos Sails Arctic Route Trial From Calais
Sea to sea navigator Willy de Roos departed Calais in a 42-foot ketch named Williwaw aiming to thread the Northwest Passage from Atlantic to Pacific. The 3,000 mile Arctic route had been completed only once before by Roald Amundsen from 1903 to 1906 in a 71-foot vessel. De Roos, who circumnavigated the globe from 1972 to 1975, says the 13,000-mile voyage could take three years, though he hopes to finish in one.
