Chief of Ships Predicts Automation at Long Beach Yard

Rear Adm. Edward J. Fahy of the Navy's Bureau of Ships says Long Beach Naval Shipyard will automate to boost speed and cut costs. A 24 week modernization study begins with the yard peaking at about 6,500 workers this summer, with ongoing concerns over skilled labor shortages as shipbuilding grows more complex. Fahy notes the yard is modern and flexible enough for automation and will visit other sites, including San Diego and San Francisco, for the modernization program.
