Atom powered pacemakers implanted in Newark patients
The first American made nuclear powered pacemakers were implanted in seven Newark volunteers with plans for 39 more across nine hospitals this year. The units, about the size of a cigarette lighter and weighing 3 1/2 ounces, use plutonium 284 and are expected to last a decade or more, avoiding frequent battery replacements.
